Why Do We Have So Many Near-Misses at Airports?
After watching a news feature on the rapidly increasing use of driverless cars, I found myself pondering the complex nature of airport safety in comparison.
With their advanced technology and ability to land flights with ease, one would think that safety concerns would be minimal. However, collisions and near-misses continue to occur on airport runways with alarming frequency.
A recent incident at San Diego International Airport serves as a harrowing example of this problem. It’s troubling to think that despite all the advancements we’ve made there are still such pervasive safety concerns in this context.
United Airlines CEO, Scott Kirby, recently blamed the Federal Aviation Administration for delays under his company’s watch.
This begs the question as to whether or not the FAA may be understaffed, unable to meet the demands of increasingly busy airports. Perhaps airlines should invest in more people rather than solely relying on 5G technology to solve these problems.
At the end of the day, safety should always be the primary concern, and we should not need a tragedy to occur before making necessary changes.
