Reality behind natural pyramid-like mountain discovered in Antarctica

Antarctica, the frozen landmass, has never ceased to surprise us with its discoveries. Recently, a breathtaking pyramid-shaped mountain was spotted in the remote southern part of Antarctica’s Ellsworth mountain range. Initially, the discovery caused immense chatter on the internet, leading many to speculate that this could be a man-made structure built by ancient civilizations or even extraterrestrial beings. However, experts were quick to dispel these theories and disclosed that the ice pyramids are entirely natural occurrences.

These peaks have been documented through satellite images, and they are said to measure only two kilometers at their base, resembling the size and shape of Egypt’s impressive Pyramids of Giza. The Ellsworth Mountains, home to this newly found pyramid, are the highest mountain range, stretching over 350 kilometers and 48 kilometers broad on the western edge of the Ronne Ice Shelf in Marie Byrd Land.

Recognized as one of the coldest mountain ranges, the average temperature in the Ellsworth Mountains is -30 degrees Celsius, making it nearly impossible to explore and accessible only for a brief period from November to January. Nevertheless, scientists continue to study these mountains to learn more about this natural wonder.

Many have been claiming on the internet that these might have links to the Illuminati, while others proposed that Antarctica might have been covered in rainforests during prehistoric times, making such constructions feasible.

Meanwhile, geology experts, led by Professor Eric Rignot, have debunked these speculations. This pyramid’s peaked shape has been attributed to the convergence of glaciers, which is a natural occurrence witnessed in various locations across the world.

This discovery of a pyramid-like mountain in Antarctica however, remains an intriguing natural phenomenon, which also serves as a reminder of the wonders that the Earth serves as home to.

Well, the reality might not impress you. These pyramid-like mountains actually exist in the Ellsworth range, and have been well-documented. They are also known as ‘horn,’ which dominate the glacial areas, as they form from the convergence of glaciers that scour the sides of an existing landmass. Mostly, they are formed due to sharp circular erosion of multiple glaciers which diverge from the same central point. The popular Matterhorn Peak is perhaps the world’s most visual example of such a natural formation.

Referring to this, Eric Rigot, a geology professor at the University of California, stated, “This is just a mountain that looks like a pyramid.”
