Campbell Bay in Great Nicobar Island is now accessible to tourists
Did you know that there is an opportunity for tourists to visit Campbell Bay in Great Nicobar Island? That’s right – since January 2023, a total of 8,026 tickets have been issued to both islanders and non-islanders who want to explore its beauty. According to official reports, out of those tickets, 7,316 were issued to islanders while 710 tickets went to non-islanders who wished to visit Campbell Bay. Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai confirmed this information while responding to the query of two members of the House in Rajya Sabha recently.
While it is exciting that people can now visit Campbell Bay, it’s important to note that there are laws and regulations in place to govern the movement of tourists and protect the aboriginal tribes that inhabit the island. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands (Protection of Aboriginal Tribes) Regulation, 1956, for instance, ensures that the islands’ indigenous people are not disturbed by external influences.
To encourage tourism in Great Nicobar Island, the government has also taken several steps, including providing faster and reliable internet connectivity with the help of submarine optical fibre cable, helicopter services, and the inclusion of Great Nicobar Island under the Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik (UDAN) Scheme. These initiatives will not only help boost tourism but also enhance the overall development of the region.
