The coastal path in England
The longest coastal path in the world is almost done, and it’s 2,700 miles around the coast of England. It took ten years to plan and there were many fights with people who own the land. By 2020, anyone can walk on the whole path for free. This will bring people and their money to places that are far away from cities. Scotland and Wales already have coastal paths. If you like walking long distances, you could soon walk around all of the UK. But I feel unsure about telling people about long paths. They usually bring a lot of people to walk on routes that are in guidebooks and easy to find, but it’s better to walk on public footpaths that are just as pretty and not crowded.
The article talks about good places to go for long walks in the UK and how the author has walked across many parts of the UK. However, the author’s favorite walks are on isolated moors. The author recently walked around the Corrour Estate in the Scottish Highlands and stayed in a former railway signal box (now a bed and breakfast), which they found unforgettable. They like walking alone, which might be because of their age. The author also talks about two German canoeists who hiked for 11 days through mosquito-infested swamps, swimming across rivers and lakes to get to the nearest town after their canoe was wrecked on rocks. Despite the intense hike, they weren’t tired and enjoyed some beer at a motel.
